Why Do Teeth Darken?
As we get older the outer layer of the enamel on our teeth wears down. The darker color beneath then begins to show. It’s not only age that affects the color of our teeth. Staining from coffee, tea, soft drinks, tobacco products, foods and medications are common causes of darkened teeth.
One of the most common forms of staining is created by the foods and drink we consume. Food particles are naturally attracted to a tooth’s enamel. As a result coffee, tea, berries and certain sauces are well-known for staining teeth. As time passes, teeth become more absorbent and staining becomes more of an issue.
In-Office vs. At Home Teeth Whitening Solutions
As a consumer you have several options when it comes to whitening your teeth. You can purchase an at home whitener or you can have whitening performed in the dentist office. Take-home solutions can be effective at removing stains but they are also known to harbor substances that can wear down a tooth’s enamel.
At home whitening solutions include teeth whitening strips, toothpaste, and mouthwash.
Whitening strips are thin, flexible pieces of plastic with a thin layer of peroxide on one side. These whitening kits come with strips for upper and lower teeth. The strips are placed across your teeth, gently pressing them into place. It is worn twice a day for 30 minutes.
The least expensive options are whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes. These are designed to remove surface stains. Unlike professional whitening procedures, toothpastes and mouthwashes do not lighten the actual shade of the tooth.
The most dramatic results are seen at the dentist. This is because there is a higher concentration of peroxide in the gels offered by dental professionals.
We proudly offer three whitening solutions at our office. For a majority of our patients, we create custom trays and dispense whitening gel to use at home. Result do vary but typically after an hour or less, the gel will break apart the bonds between stained molecules, giving you a brighter smile.
For our younger patients whose teeth are still moving, we use the whitening strips. If our patients need immediate results, we perform in-office power bleaching. Power bleaching uses a high-power light and a whitening agent to achieve optimal results.
Professional whitening performed by our office is considered to be the most effective and safest method; done properly, tooth whitening can last as long as five years. Over-the-counter whitening systems are somewhat effective as long as they are monitored and directions followed closely.
